What is the Whole30 Reset: Spend 30 days (the month of September) only eating whole foods in order to hit a reset button on negative patterns and tune into foods that make your body feel great.

What are the rules? For 30 days you will abstain from the following: alcohol, legumes, grains, processed or refined sugars, dairy, and stepping on the scale. You will eat foods such as fruits, vegetables, potatoes, nuts, seeds, fish, and animal proteins.

I can’t even eat quinoa? WTF? There are several goals of the Whole30, and you get to hone in on what you’re hoping to achieve. One goal is to determine any potential food allergies or sensitivities. If you’ve never tried an elimination diet, or a strict Whole30, eliminating foods such as grains, legumes, and dairy can be really helpful in helping you determine if you are sensitive to such foods.

But, what about exercise? Keep doing it! There are tons of great Whole30 ride snack options from baby food pouches to dried fruit, to roasted sweet potato with cinnamon and salt.

Do I have to give up coffee? Hell no! But you might find you need less of it as you move through the month.

I want to do it, but...I have a weekend in Cancun (or whatever you have going on…). There is always a reason to not change your eating habits. Your cousin's wedding, the planned weekend in the mountains, a big ride... I address these in what I call “Bold Lines.” First you need to decide on your why. Why are you doing the Whole30? If you are doing it as an elimination diet and want to determine food allergies or sensitivities it is important to stay strict for the full 30 days. If it’s a reset and a tool to help you remember and determine which foods make you feel amazing and which foods make you feel like poo, draw your bold lines around a few select foods or events. For example, “I will have 1 drink every Saturday.” Or, “I will stay strict except for the Friday night of my son’s birthday party.” Or “I will eat oatmeal before my long ride or run.”

I will say, it’s empowering to stay true to the Whole30 despite the inevitable life events. I have flown to visit friends, camped for a birthday party, and attended many a social occasion while staying true to the rules of Whole30. Not only did I return from those events with a happy heart and happy gut, but it taught me my willpower is stronger than I thought and I can be social and healthy simultaneously. You don’t need to be a hermit to experience success on the Whole30 :)
